FPV Drone Flying

What is it?

FPV Drone Flying is where you fly with a drone while watching through a headset with a screen that displays the drone camera. Because of this you feel very emersed and almost as if you are flying yourself. While the headset seems like a VR headset, it's not a full VR headset, you can't move your head to look around and you only have a ( quite small ) square screen to look at. If you want to look at something behind you, you will have to use the controller to turn the drone around.

My setup

I build all my drones myself and currently own a 5 inch "race" quad. It's not really a race quad but just a racing frame. Because of this frame, the drone is much smaller and lighter, while keeping very thick 4 mm arms. These won't crack, even when flying full throttle into a tree. ( I have done this before on accident 😋 ) This picture is taken when I was replacing the vtx because I had issues with lines in my screen.

Parts

These are the parts I used to build my drone and are noted here mostly as a reference for myself, also keep in mind that this is from early 2018. Most of the parts used will have a better version by now and it's probably better to build a 6s rig by now if you want to carry a camera.

Choice of music

I always try to make the music fit the flight as best as I can, and really try to fit it the mood when I was flying. When I'm more calm the music and flying style will be more relaxed than when I'm very happy and awake.

YouTube

One of the only social networks I currently use is YouTube, because I don't have that many video's and because my friends and family know how to use this website. When I have more video's to show I might configure a peertube instance.

List of my favourite flights

These are a few of my favourite flights in random order.

lighthouse

I made this video when I was on vacation in Blankenberge - Belgium. The two people that were sitting on the bench while I flew by and looked back at them was my favourite part. This is a spot that was optimal for my drone setup since it wasn't too big. If I was going to redo this recording I might not hang around the groud this much and maybe fly over the sand a bit. But if I wanted to do this, I should have picked a different spot to start from. Watch it here

cinematic

This video was made in Antwerp - Belgium. I was very stressed about something when I went to fly on this recording. That's why I wanted to fly very relaxed and not do anything special. The music seemed to fit very well and makes it relaxing to watch. While flying I chased a bird for a few seconds, this was a lot of fun to be in the air with him. While this also happened in the lighthouse video this was more of a flying together and not that the bird was very scared from the drone. Watch it here

ladder

This video was recorded in my neighbourhood. There was a new store being built and I always wanted to fly at a small construction site. I've had a lot of fun with this one and had to get out of my comfort zone a bit to try a few more risky moves. That's why you can see that I crash at the end. I was my intention to keep this in the video because my intent is not to have perfect video's. I just film them for fun. When I hang in the ladder and the music stops, you can hear a dog barking in the distance. After inspecting the drone, there was no serious damage, only the GoPro and battery had a few new scratches. forest

This video was just a fun flight in the woods. Fox Stevenson just released a new single and I liked it so much I just had to post a video. A family turned up while I was flying and it was fun to know that they were watching me fly by. Ever since I have had my drone, I think about how it would look to people that see me fly. I have only seen other pilots fly but not myself. And think it would be cool to record my flights in the 3th person someday. Watch it here
